It hit me one day that when I worked in my corporate job, I had a team to get everything done. Not only that, I was really good at managing a team. My talent was leveraging other people’s talents to achieve the desired outcome.

So why wasn't I using a team when I was out on my own? How had I managed to "forget" my talent?

I think we all want the same thing. I’m sure there are variations, but the basic theme is you want to live well, provide a good life for the people you love, enjoy time off, be there for your kids…But does it have to be so hard???

People suffer from burnout, and businesses go under when they…

  • Don’t know how to let go. They insist on doing everything themselves because they don’t think anyone else knows how.

  • Don’t think they can afford help. The truth is, they can’t afford not to. It’s impossible to have a big impact when you think small.

  • Spend their days putting out fires. They have a reactive rather than a proactive approach to their business.

So what is this syndrome? Imagine being one train conductor and needing to drive multiple trains to the same destination. If you're the only conductor, how would you do that? Chances are, you'd end up driving one train a few feet, then you'd get off, go to the next train, drive THAT one a few feet, then stop, go to the third one, drive that one a few feet, etc. etc.

As you've probably figured out, you would take an awfully long time to get all those trains to the same station.

Now, imagine those trains as different aspects of your business. Maybe you want to create a product (one train), maybe you want to write a book to add to your credibility (another train), and of course you have to keep providing your services (a third train) and marketing your services so you have a steady stream of income (a fourth train).

Get the picture?

Is there a better way to get all those trains to the station? Yes! You can prioritize which trains are the most crucial ones, and get those to the station first. (For instance, trains that keep income flowing into the business are probably the most important.) You can hook all the trains together (automating the tasks) so they get to the station without a conductor. Or you can hire other people to drive a train for you.

If you've ever wondered why some entrepreneurs can move forward faster, launching new products, handling a regular stream of clients, creating events, getting new programs off the ground etc. this is how they do it.

They aren't the ones driving all the trains. They’ve figured out another way to get all the trains into the station.

Or, another way to look at this is using the concept of leverage. Basically, successful entrepreneurs have learned to leverage the time and talents of other people to get things done.
