Years ago I had a small, struggling coaching practice I started because I wanted FREEDOM from the day-to-day corporate grind. I mean I had suffered for 10+ years doing what other people wanted and making my bosses wealthy. So why not start my own company doing what I love? Right?
Wrong.
Within a year and a half, I was under so much stress and so overwhelmed I almost collapsed from fatigue. My passion for my work had crumbled. Ugh. I can still feel that big, fat pit swelling in my stomach just thinking about it.
But it was the best thing to happen to me. It was exactly what I needed to hear to make a commitment to myself to STOP allowing feeling overwhelmed to control my life and instead to break through the barriers that were getting in my way of money, freedom and ultimate success.
Fast forward to TODAY. I have my own very successful business that generates way over six figures every year (and I did it within 9 months!) I’m working less than I’ve ever worked in my life. I have the money and the time to:

It hit me one day that when I worked in my corporate job, I had a team to get everything done. Not only that, I was really good at managing a team. My talent was leveraging other people’s talents to achieve the desired outcome.
So why wasn't I using a team when I was out on my own? How had I managed to "forget" my talent?

My first team was a volunteer team. I pulled together a board of advisors to transform my 4-person professional association into an 80+ strong membership within 11 months.

I think we all want the same thing. I’m sure there are variations, but the basic theme is you want to live well, provide a good life for the people you love, enjoy time off, be there for your kids…But does it have to be so hard???
People suffer from burnout, and businesses go under when they…

Don’t know how to let go. They insist on doing everything themselves because they don’t think anyone else knows how.

Don’t think they can afford help. The truth is, they can’t afford not to. It’s impossible to have a big impact when you think small.

Spend their days putting out fires. They have a reactive rather than a proactive approach to their business.

In fact, a lot of this can be wrapped up into something I like to call "Multiple Train Syndrome" -- a syndrome that I've noticed plaguing most entrepreneurs.
So what is this syndrome? Imagine being one train conductor and needing to drive multiple trains to the same destination. If you're the only conductor, how would you do that? Chances are, you'd end up driving one train a few feet, then you'd get off, go to the next train, drive THAT one a few feet, then stop, go to the third one, drive that one a few feet, etc. etc.
As you've probably figured out, you would take an awfully long time to get all those trains to the same station.
Now, imagine those trains as different aspects of your business. Maybe you want to create a product (one train), maybe you want to write a book to add to your credibility (another train), and of course you have to keep providing your services (a third train) and marketing your services so you have a steady stream of income (a fourth train).
Get the picture?
Is there a better way to get all those trains to the station? Yes! You can prioritize which trains are the most crucial ones, and get those to the station first. (For instance, trains that keep income flowing into the business are probably the most important.) You can hook all the trains together (automating the tasks) so they get to the station without a conductor. Or you can hire other people to drive a train for you.
If you've ever wondered why some entrepreneurs can move forward faster, launching new products, handling a regular stream of clients, creating events, getting new programs off the ground etc. this is how they do it.
They aren't the ones driving all the trains. They’ve figured out another way to get all the trains into the station.
Or, another way to look at this is using the concept of leverage. Basically, successful entrepreneurs have learned to leverage the time and talents of other people to get things done.
In fact, here's an illustration of what it looks like to leverage the time and talents of other people:
This business owner is missing opportunities and losing money because he's trying to do it all himself (not to mention how stressed and overwhelmed he's feeling). Not a good idea.
